Citroen wanted a GT coupe to fill a void in their vehicle line-up and subsequently purchased Maserati with the intention to couple their high-performance engines with Citroens own sophisticated suspension.
The result was the Citroen SM, which was first shown at the Geneva motor show in March 1970. The SM was filled with ground breaking features including hydro-pneumatic self-levelling suspension and variable assist power steering. The styling cues could be seen from both Citroen (DS) and Maserati (Mistral) that resulted in sleek, aerodynamic looking car.
Powered by a 3 litre Maserati V6, with triple weber carburettors, the SM was provided drive through a 3 speed Borg warner automatic transmission.
This SM was manufactured in Paris in November 1972 (built to 1973, US specifications including the round non-turning headlights, a feature that was banned in the US) and was sold to Eco Energy Inc, New York where it was their CEO’s car.
In 1975 the car was sold to a Mr Steve Curlee from Kansas, who owned the car for 20 years and transported the car around the world with him where ever he moved. Under Mr Curlee’s ownership the car spent time traversing the United States (Kansas, Rohde Island, Washington DC and Tulsa) and he took the car to Guam whilst stationed there with the US Navy.
The car returned to Kansas where it was sold to a Mr Laslo Sczegoldi, who carefully had the car maintained by Loop Automotive for 10 years.
In 2005 the car was purchased and imported the car to Sydney Australia. The car was expertly overhauled and restored, and was maintained by SM Australia and Citroen Hornsby before being sold again in Sydney and then recently moving to Victoria.
This rare and collectable car is in very good condition and drives and operates very well.
