Delahaye 148L Convertible 3.5 Litre Grand Routier with bodywork by Guillore.
Built in 1949 this is thought to be the only Delahaye Convertible constructed on the 148L Long Wheel Base chassis usually reserved for saloons.
Delivered to Joubert’s British Motors of Bourke Street Melbourne, who were the Delahaye concessionaires for Australia.
First sold in 1951 to a Mr R. Graham who retained ownership of the car until 1975 before passing it on to the last owners who were close friends of Mr Graham. Accordingly this is the first time this car has ever been offered to the public in over 72 years!
In the intervening period the car has had new door skins ,interior and cloth roof by Blackmans. Still in the original livery, the car was stripped back to bare metal 30 years ago and repainted, the chrome work refurbished and the metal dashboard carefully refinished in the faux timber finish as it was when new. At that time the car was also rewired and had the wheels rebuilt.
In 2012 at 71,000 klms the engine was fully rebuilt by IBD Automotive Maintenance, and this engine is a credit to both Delahaye and the engine builders, it is smooth and powerful with a really responsive feel and a great sound. The original Cotel electric gearbox is a delight to use once mastered providing quick and positive changes between the gears.
This is certainly a unique opportunity to acquire a classic matching numbers, and colours Delahaye Convertible in the grand style. It should be noted that all the Grand Routier cars were built in RHD configuration.
